GREAT FUN AT THE HAWAIIAN LUAU

Elvis is alive and well! At least that’s what they were saying on September 29 when we hosted our annual Dinner Dance & Silent Auction “Blue Hawaii” at Villa DeBruno.

Guests arrived in their favorite tropical attire to a beautifully decorated room. For one night only, Villa DeBruno was transformed into an exotic Hawaiian scene complete with palm trees, grassy umbrellas, tropical fish, sand buckets and seashells. Tables were accented with colorful leis and floral prints. Of course, with the theme Blue Hawaii, you couldn’t help but notice all the Elvis memorabilia.

Hawaiian music played in the background as guests explored the Silent Auction Display, which was laden with over $5,000 in donated merchandise. Dinner was fantastic as always, serving up an assortment of delectable foods including some Hawaiian specialties. Shortly following dinner, Elvis truly stole the show!

Entertainment was provided by Calumet City’s own Dennis Stella and his band. The band warmed up the crowd for a short while until Dennis stepped out onto the stage looking just as Elvis appeared in the movie “Blue Hawaii.” The stage was about 3 ft. high and included a long runway that extended about 20 feet into the dining area. This combined with the professional sound and lighting, made it seem as though you were seeing Elvis Presley live from a concert venue.

All eyes were glued to the stage all night long, and the energy level was colossal! Dennis would occasionally step off the runway to perform up close and personal to the crowd. His second set included a costume change into the white jump suit for which Elvis was most famous. Of course, scarves were thrown out to the adoring fans that came up to the stage for a hug and personal serenade. Perhaps one of the most special moments of the evening was when David Brown was invited to the stage to accompany Dennis in singing “Hound Dog.” With a smile ear to ear, and a pretty good set of vocal pipes, David definitely gave Dennis a run for his money!

New Hope’s annual Dinner Dance & Silent Auction not only serves as one of our major fundraisers of the year, but also provides an opportunity for our friends and families to come together and celebrate our accomplishments. This year’s efforts raised over $16,000, and entertained 250 friends of New Hope Center. Revenue was raised through ticket sales, silent auction sales, commemorative ad book sales, and raffle sales.

Thanks so much to all those who helped support our event, the volunteers, our ad book sponsors, our donors, our guests. Your support made this event a huge success. To mention just a few names…
